PCS move part 4

October 9, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Hey y’all! I took a bit of a break from blogging after my husband left for deployment last month. I’ve been very busy getting into a solo parenting rhythm as well as surviving this rough first trimester of my pregnancy, but now I am ready to get back into the groove of things. So let’s get back on track with the PCS move series. Last post I talked about Nevada and Arizona. This post will be about our visit through New Mexico and Texas!

New Mexico

(At a rest stop right after entering New Mexico)

A place filled with lots of history, culture, and delicious Mexican food! We were fortunate enough to spend some time in Old Town Albuquerque. Founded in 1706, Old Town offers a walk through the old adobe architecture and history of the Old West, and many museums, shops, galleries, and restaurants. When we arrived it was early evening, so we found somewhere to park in the town and began walking around enjoying the scenery and searching for a place to eat dinner. We came upon a small adobe building called the “Church Street Cafe” where we decided it looked like a good spot to stop for dinner. Come to find out, over a  hundred and fifty years ago this restaurant served as a pioneer house that was built during early western expansion. Making it one of the oldest structures in the state of New Mexico. How neat is that!? Church Street Cafe offers a variety of Mexican cuisine using time proven recipes that are more than four generations old. It was pretty tasty! We enjoyed our visit to Albuquerque and would love to go back one day to really explore it some more.

After dinner, it was getting late and all of us were ready for bed. Luckily for us, Kirtland Air Force Base was a little over a twenty minute drive away from Old Town. We called on our way there to book a room for the night at the BOQ. We could tell through our interaction on the phone that the base was going to be very accommodating (it’s Air Force after all!) so we were expecting just a typical hotel room with a queen, but instead they gave us a cute little house to stay in since we were on PCS orders! This was so nice as we had been living in and out of hotels for over a week at this point. The house had a full kitchen and laundry room, so I was able to catch up on all those dirty clothes that were piling up! If you are traveling through New Mexico on PCS orders I highly recommend staying at Kirtland AFB.

Texas

We continued on I-40 through the ever expansive frontier of Texas. No visit to Texas could ever be complete without a stop at “The BIG Texan” Restaurant for dinner. This steakhouse restaurant is located in Amarillo just off of Interstate 40. This place is known for their world famous 72oz steak challenge! For those who think they are worthy enough, the challenge consists of a 72oz steak, bread roll, baked potato, shrimp, and a salad that ALL must be finished in an hour or less for it to be free! Otherwise the meal cost $72. If you aren’t up to the challenge (we weren’t! hah!) , you cannot go wrong with just ordering a regular meal or a delicious steak from their menu..literally everything is delicious and quite large! It is true, everything is bigger in Texas! This large restaurant also has arcade type games and a visitor gift shop.

(Having fun at the restaurant)

After dinner we drove another few hours north on Route 60 towards Oklahoma until we were tired enough to stop. We stayed at a Quiet Inn in a small farm town called Canadian, Texas just inside the Texas/Oklahoma border. The next morning we got up and barreled over the frozen plains towards Marion, Kansas where we could take a nice break from the road for a few days and visit with family.

Thanks for stopping by and stay tuned for the LAST post in this series next time!

xoxo,

Ashley
