I can’t believe it’s already 2019! That means we are coming up on a WHOLE YEAR since we made the move from Hawaii to Yorktown…so what better time to finally finish this PCS move series! In this final part of the series I am going to close by talking about our time in Kansas and the last stretch to our new home in Virginia!
Kansas

After leaving Texas we took a much needed break from the road to visit with my husband’s grandparents (Papa and Tutu) for a few days in Marion, Kansas. Marion is a charming small farm town of about 2,000 people. It’s located smack in the middle of Kansas that to an outsider like me, feels frozen in time in many ways. Marion only has a few shops on the Main Street and no stop lights. Everyone we met was so kind and helpful and curious to know why there was a SUV with “Hawaii” license plates parked on their main street! We enjoyed our time with family, ate some delicious midwestern German food called “Bierrocks” (baked dough around seasoned hamburger, dipped in ketchup) and we were able to get a small taste of life in America’s bread basket! Fun fact: At the county lake near this town, the guinness world record site for the most marshmallows roasted simultaneously is here! Kansas is truly the gem of the Midwest, dotted with small towns full of loving people, windmills, wheat fields, cow pastures, and wild-grown sunflowers!

Missouri “The Mighty Mississippi”

We stopped in St. Louis for the night and stayed at the Hampton Inn downtown. Our room offered a great view of the Mississippi River and the downtown city area. The hotel also had a nice restaurant on the main level near the lobby. St. Louis has lots of restaurants, bars, and museums/tours. We unfortunately did not get to spend much time in this city to explore, but we did get to see the famous gateway arch! We definitely would like to go back here one day with hopefully warmer weather, so we can really see all St. Louis has to offer!
Over the Mississippi River we went and made the last haul home to Virginia! We made a brief stop in Blacksburg, Virginia to visit my husband’s younger brother at Virginia Tech. He plays football at VT (#48), so he gave us a private grand tour of the football facilities, stadium, and the school. By the time our visit was over we were so ready to be home and off the road. For the next couple hours we toughed it out and made it to our new place in Yorktown that night. Home at last!
Well guys, that is it. Our whole PCS move from Hawaii to California to driving across the United States to Virginia! It’s now been almost a whole year since we have been living in Yorktown and it has truly become our home, we love it here! If you have read along throughout this series, I thank you and hope you enjoyed it. Looking forward to our next cross country trip in a few years 🙂
xoxo,
Ashley
